Cappadocia receives 1.5 million visitors in 6 months

The historic Cappadocia region in central Turkey received 1,412,252 visitors in the first half of 2022.

According to the data announced by the Directorate of Culture and Tourism in the province of Noshahr, the "Zalfa Oran Yeri" region topped the list of the most visited destinations in Cappadocia, receiving 397,958 tourists, followed by the "Gorama" open museum with 395,771 people, and then the underground city of Qimqali with 118,103 tourists.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency, the head of the Gorama cooperative for tourism development, Mustafa Dormaz, confirmed that Cappadocia has received local tourists from all over the world.

He pointed out that Cappadocia received the largest number of tourists in 2019, and declined in 2020 and 2021 due to the Corona virus.

The region of Cappadocia is famous for the so-called "chimneys of fairies" that were formed by natural factors, in addition to other tourist attractions such as churches carved in the rock, ancient underground cities, as well as recreational activities, especially balloon trips.

It is believed that the name "chimneys of fairies" belongs to ancient folk beliefs, according to which the jinn live in the region's caves and rocks known as "chimneys", which are caused by the interaction of natural factors, millions of years ago, and the erosion of volcanic rocks in general, by flood waters and strong winds.  And took conical shapes on top of a rocky mass, with the passage of time.
